Motif of Batik Ceplok

Batik Ceplok
Ceplokan is mean 'Sekuntum' (in Bahasa Indonesia), commonly used to refer to units of interest (eg: roses 'seceplok' means the batch of rose). In connection with geometric motifs within the scope of the box which is termed a "report card" that can be repeated - again and interconnected. At the time of Sultan Agung of Mataram kingdom XVII century until Mataram of Kartasura  XVIII century, there are several types of motifs ceplokan who has developed and used among the palace as well as the general public.

Meaning motive Ceplokan:   
  1. Bathik Ceplok Lung Slop. The fried Bathik 1 "report card" consist of two patterned box "Lung", while another box motif "Ukel". Lung is said slop means foliage framed. Meaning lung depicting life on earth, that life has its limits. While the frame of meaning is an order that must be executed in the community, regardless of position. This motif appears in period of PB IV,in Surakarta motif originated from the fusion Lung and Parang Klithik named "Ceplok Sriwedari". 
  2. Bathik Ceplok Sriwedari. Principles of Sriwedari motif same with Lung Slop, only motive ukel replaced by Isen-isen Parangan, so in a report card box, have the Lung patterned and patterned of Parangan. Meaning of this motif is symbolizes coolness and tranquility of mind and your family. And this motif can be used for all segments of society and to the status of those who are already married.  
  3. Bathik Ceplok Rengganis. Rengganis is mean Ireng Manis (sweet black), there is also associate with the name of the Goddess Rengganis. Its meaning is a hope, that life given completely sweet. In Javanese culture called "lelampahan kang sarwa manis, eca sakecagesangipun" which means that given a good way of life as well as the adequacy of everything, has a respectable position in society. This motif can be used for all segments of society and the status is used for people who are already have married.

Motif of Batik Kawung

Batik Kawung
The pictorial motif named fruit of palm trees ('kolang-kaling'). Bathik Kawung rectangular geometric form cognition in Javanese culture represents a doctrine of the human life.


At first, this kawung bathik used by among the royal family, but after Mataram splited into two,  this patterns is subject to a different class. In Surakarta this motif used by groups Punokawan and Abdidalem in Priyantaka row, in the puppet characters, this kawung motif used by Semar, Gareng, Petruk & amp; Cumbersome.


The motif variety of Bathik Kawung:
  1. Bathik Kawung Picis taken from the name a denomination of ten cents.
  2. Bathik Kawung Bribil taken from the name a denomination of twenty-five cents.
  3. Bathik Kawung Sen taken from the name a denomination of one cent. The meaning of this pattern is that life will get back to nature Sawung. Thus in ancient tradition of this motif is used to cover the dead.

Manners Wearing of Batik in the Palace of Surakarta

The motif of Bathik related with the sign Ranks in the palace. In manners wearing of bathik in Surakarta set by Pakoe Boewono III, related to the type of motive and the wearer's position or strata. In the social order Surakarta in the past, fashion and style of dressed is a reflection of the level of rank and position (strata) of the wearer which is reflected in the motif/pattern of the dress was wearing.

Dress manners is valid both in official events or as usual event, dress manners at Surakarta public in the past has been set in the policy King of Surakarta, when Surakarta lead by Pakoe Boewono III. And clothing Bathik also be uniform for the Palace of Surakarta, both from the lower class strata, to the King and His Family.

Motif/pattern Bathik wearing among the royal Surakarta:
  1. Bathik parangrusak. This motif is used by Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Aryo Duke (KGPAA), Prince's son, Prince Sentana and Sentana palace riya nginggil ranking regents who holds KRMH.
  2. Bathik Udan Riris. Bathik motif is used by Pepatihdalem. (From information Pakoe Boewono XII; if they still son of law with the King).
  3. Bathik Rejeng. This motif type worn by the soldiers commander (at Senior Officer) and ambassador of the palace.
  4. Bathik Tambal Kanoman. Bathikan Kampuh/Dodotan the Regent made uniform Regent Anom and district office clerks environment. 
  5. Bathik Semen Latar Putih. This motif is in use by court employees rank Regent, Regent Anom inside and outside. 
  6. Bathik Padas Gempal. This motif is used by court employees who rank Panewu/Mantri from sorogeni class (warrior Sorogeni, the red uniforms) down. 
  7. Bathik Medhangan. This motif is used by the Panewu/Mantri down from Sangkragnyana group. 
  8. Bathik Kumitir. This motif is used by the Panewu/Mantri down from Kanoman group. 
  9. Bathik Tambal Miring. This motif is used by the Abdidalem who rank Panewu/Mantri of class Clerk. 
  10. Bathik Jamblang. This motif is used by the Panewu/Mantri down from the duchy group Anom. 
  11. Bathik Ayam Puser. This motif is used by the Abdidalem who rank Panewu/Mantri down from Yogeswara group or Suranata or Abdidalem Ulama. 
  12. Bathik Slobog. This motif is used by the Abdidalem Panewu/Mantri down from class musician (gamelan). 
  13. Batik Wora Wari Rumpuk. This motif is used by the Abdidalem Panewu/Mantri down from Pangrehpraja group or who oversees the region. 
  14. Bathik Krambil Secukil. This motif is used by the  Abdidalem Panewu/Mantri down, under the command Kepatihan. 
  15. Kain Lurik Perkutut. Is the cloth used Abdidalem rank Jajar Priyantaka. 
  16. Kain Sindur. A cloth used Abdidalem of Krisdastawa or Canthangbalung.
